Hedy Lamarr- "Mother of Wi-Fi"
As co-inventor of "frequency hopping spread spectrum" technology, which quickly switches radio frequencies during transmission to prevent jamming and essentially established the foundation for contemporary wireless communication systems like Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth, Hedy Lamarr is acknowledged for her significant contribution to technology and is referred to as the "mother of Wi-Fi".
Hedy was motivated to support the
military effort because she had been profoundly impacted by World War II.
Inspired by her environment, Lamarr and composer George Antheil came up with a
ground-breaking concept: frequency hopping spread spectrum technology. The
innovation created an unbreakable encryption that stopped secret messages from
being intercepted by adjusting radio frequencies at random intervals between
transmission and reception. This allowed individuals to communicate as needed.
Not only did Hedy Lamarr's groundbreaking "frequency hopping" technology lay the groundwork for modern wireless communication like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but her underrepresentation as a female inventor in a male-dominated field also hindered her invention's recognition, depriving her of credit for her lifetime contributions and drawing attention to the larger problem of gender bias in the tech industry. She was not given credit for her work until much later in life, despite the fact that her invention was essential to modern technology.
To counteract racial bias in
computing and technology today, I think tech businesses should encourage
diverse recruiting processes that guarantee teams represent a range of ideas
and experiences. To further encourage inclusive practices and increase
awareness, teach data scientists and developers on implicit bias. Participate
in the design and development process with groups that could be impacted by
technology to make sure their wants and concerns are taken into account.
Lastly, encourage public dialogues, workshops, and educational initiatives to
raise awareness of racial bias in technology.
